About

Run and Bike for Bamboo 2022 is an activity organized by Burgos Agroforestry Nature Reserve to celebrate the World Bamboo Day with the concept of "The Grass of Hope"

The campaign is a virtual run and ride experience to raise awareness about Bamboo and its benefits to the world. Funds raised will help support BAFNR Bamboo Rehabilitation Project aligned with their ongoing response to create jobs for many young people and contribute to poverty alleviation in the community around the Agroforest. This will be done by converting the distance pledged by all participants into Bamboos to be planted.

This event will be accommodating not just runners and bikers enthusiasts but also walkers and hikers.

Do what you love, help along the way. Run, walk, and ride for the Bamboos this next months.

Why Bamboo?

Bamboo Produces more Oxygen than Trees

Planting bamboo is one of the best ways to help our environment. Bamboo is a crucial element in the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. A grove of bamboo release 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees. Because of this, planting bamboo is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and help fight global warming. A perfect selection for Going Green.

Bamboo is a great ‘Green Solution’. Bamboo is a wonderful replacement plants for trees with its short growth cycle and a high carbon dioxide exchange rate. Bamboo is a grass with 80 genera and over 1200 documented species. A mature grove of bamboo sends up new shoots every year. These new shoots reach their full size in just a couple months. Some grow 47 inches in 24 hours and can reach over 100 feet in height within 60 days. This short growth cycle makes it a great replacement for our slow growing forest that are being steadily cut back. It can provide erosion control when other plants wash away. It can screen out unsightly areas and provide a noise barrier in the process.

Bamboo Reduces Poverty and Provides Livelihoods for Local Farmers

The bamboo sector plays an important role in the livelihoods of local farmers. Developing a stable bamboo industry is a great way to help reduce poverty, increase economic opportunities for men and women, and to fight global unemployment.

In less developed countries, unemployment has often resulted in conflicts and social unrest. The production and manufacturing of bamboo products can contribute to a more socially and economically stable environment as it creates job opportunities in areas that are most affected. Through small businesses, social enterprises and community groups, bamboo can generate new sources of income and a better quality of life for rural people.

Can bamboo help save the planet? Yes, we believe it can!

Of course, it would be naive to think that bamboo is the solution to all our global problems, but in terms of rehabilitation of degraded land, reforestation, carbon sequestration, and poverty alleviation, bamboo can certainly be part of the solution as it provides countless benefits that can play a very important role in at least 7 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
